Home Remodeling

Making changes to your home is personal, and the last thing people want to do is hire someone who really doesn’t understand what you want or how you want it. Home improvement is absolutely a worthwhile investment, but if you’re planning on staying in your home for a while, it’s important that the remodeling is done to absolute perfection.

With that said, how do you choose the right home remodeling contractor? What are important questions to ask before hiring one? Here are some helpful tips on hiring the right home remodeling contractor:

1) A home improvement company should always offer a free consultation with the general contractor or estimator. If they charge for a consultation, they’re probably a small company who hasn’t been in business long enough to know what they’re doing. In rare circumstances, you may find that you are charged for an estimation if it involves extensive research and designs required for design and planning – but this is rare.

2) The most important thing you should look for at the consultation is the interest level and care of the person you are meeting with.

Are they rushed and impatient, or are they interested in what you’re saying and communicating their own ideas to help you? Is their appearance sloppy and dirty, or are they professional? You might think that being in the business of home improvements, looking sloppy isn’t necessarily a bad thing. But remember that an individual with self-respect will be more likely to have respect and care for others.

3) Don’t look at the cheapest price as the most important decision-making point. Do look at what previous clients have said, as well as samples of past products.

A cheap home improvement contractor may sound nice since you could save a few hundred dollars, but the amount you may spend in later repairs due to unprofessional or unfinished work could result in costs up to triple the amount you previously “saved”.

4) Find out what the home improvement contractor offers in terms of future repairs. If you are getting your kitchen remodeled, as an example, find out what they offer if something breaks down or needs repair. Professional home remodeling contractors will repair or fix broken parts at little or no cost. Check what they guarantee and what they offer – the last thing you want to do is turn your new sink on which then doesn’t work, and find that your home remodeling contractor has disappeared or will not fix it.

4) Above all else, trust your instinct. If you feel uncomfortable or unsure about a home remodeling contractor, find another one. An investment like home improvement is something you should be sure of and happy about. After all, it’s your home we’re talking about.

Home Improvement is a large industry and is very competitive. The majority of home improvement contractors are professional and have a high percentage of satisfied clients, so finding one that’s right for you is pretty simple. These are just a few tips that can help you along the way.

So you’ve made the decision to remodel your house. The next thing you need to do is find the right contractor, one who will be able to complete the job on time and within budget. Hiring a good contractor involves doing a little research, but doing so will save you from possible problems later on.

No matter what kind of work you are getting done, you should always check with the local builders’ association for a list of good contractors. Using this list, ask the local licensing board if the contractors are licensed, or if anyone has filed complaints against them. The Better Business Bureau is another good resource to inquire about contractor information. After the research is complete, gather bids from three different contractors. Don’t always just pick the lowest bid; a bid that is too low is a warning sign that something is wrong. You have to remember that the contractor still needs to pay for the supplies and the costs of labor.

After you have narrowed your list down to three possible candidates you can start asking questions.

How many years have they been in business? Do they have adequate insurance? Is the work going to be done by them, or are they going to hire subcontractors? Who provides their supplies? Be sure to contact suppliers and subcontractors, to ask whether they have a good relationship with the contractor in question. Check references of at least three of their past clients to see if the contractor did good work, finished in the specified timeframe, and came in on budget.

When hiring a residential contractor, always draw up a written contract. Make sure everything is spelled out in the contract, including what the project is, how long it is going to take, how much it is going to cost, and a list of materials.

This is a time-consuming process, but it’s worthwhile, because having a reliable and skilled contractor will make the remodeling process go smoothly, saving you money as well as possible problems in the long run.

Home Remodeling

If you are seriously thinking about hiring a home remodeling contractor, you should take the time to give each one of these three questions, some thought. These questions could save you a lot of money and frustration.

1. Are you going to be doing the work your self? Most of the time your contractor will sell you the job, but won’t be doing any of the work himself. Get some more info about the crew that he will be sending to your job. You might get along with the contractor, but could have problems with the workers.

2. Make sure that you have emergency telephone numbers, in case one of the workers gets hurt and make sure that you know where the nearest hospital is located. You could find your self in charge of the situation, especially if there’s only one worker on the job.

3. You should have direct access to your contractor, 24 hours a day, just in case something happened in the middle of the night.

All sorts of things could happen, while your contractor or his crew isn’t on the job site. Ask your contractors, if they turn their cell phone off or don’t answer their phone, during certain hours. If this is the case, make sure that they give you an additional phone number, in case there is an emergency.

Each one of these questions might not really sound like they’re that big of a deal, until something happens. I’ve already had problems with each one of these questions and I’m speaking from experience.

Here’s a little heads up, for homeowners. There are plenty of books available on hiring contractors. If you bought one of these books for and it’s saved you some frustration, money or even solved some of your problems, how much would this book actually be worth.

Don’t forget your local libraries, there is plenty of information on home improvement contractors and remodeling projects at larger libraries.
